Port Reports from Belgrad

The article by Snežana Toševa examines the origins and development of Belgrade’s cargo port on the Danube, from the first planning initiatives of the 1920s to the extensive construction works launched in 1957. It focuses on the transformation of a previously only partially used riverbank into a modern port and industrial complex, including quays, warehouses, silos, cold-storage facilities, transport routes and railway connections. Published in the edited volume "The Danube in Serbia" (edited in 2018 by Jelena Jovanović Simić), the essay shows how architects, engineers and construction companies developed innovative responses to difficult ground conditions and demanding logistical requirements. It also traces the port’s role in Belgrade’s economic growth and in the city’s emergence as an important transport and trading centre on the Danube.
